Shiatsu is a hands-on healing therapy, based on a synthesis of ancient Japanese massage techniques with traditional Chinese meridian theory and Western physiology. It is a deeply relaxing experience as it calms the nervous system, enhances blood circulation and improves the energy flow in the body.

The philosophy underlying Shiatsu is that vital energy (Ki in Japanese) flows throughout the body in channels called meridians. Symptoms of ill health arise when the Ki flow becomes blocked or depleted. In a Shiatsu session the practitioner uses a variety of techniques, including different types of pressure, stretching, holding and movements to restore and improve energy flow.

Shiatsu is a holistic therapy that not only works on the physical body but also on an emotional and mental level.

What can be treated?

Shiatsu relaxes mind and body as well as restoring and balancing energy. This has a positive effect on circulation, breathing, posture and general well being.

Conditions which can be relieved include:
• Back, neck and joint pain
• Headaches and migraines
• Reduced mobility and joint stiffness
• Menstrual and menopausal problems
• Digestive problems
• Asthmatic symptoms and allergies
• Sports injuries
• Depression and anxiety
• Stress and muscle tension
• Fatigue and disturbed sleep

Shiatsu is also beneficial during pregnancy and after childbirth, as a support in difficult times and as prevention of illness.

What to expect

The initial session will last approximately one and a half hours, as the practitioner takes a detailed case history to form a clear picture of your health. Follow-up sessions will last approximately one hour.

Shiatsu usually takes place on a futon at floor level although it is possible to sit on a chair if you are unable to lie down. As you will remain fully clothed, please wear loose, comfortable clothes (preferably cotton). It is advisable not to eat heavily in the two hours prior to the treatment and not to drink alcohol at all before and immediately after the session. If possible drink plenty of water after the treatment and avoid strenuous or stressful activities.
