Ear candles, also called thermal-auricular therapy, is a pleasant and non-invasive treatment of the ears, used to treat a variety of conditions. The candles are made from the natural ingredients of beeswax, honey extracts, sage, St Johns Wort, chamomile and beta-carotene. The candles are used to treat many ailments, including migraine and headaches, glue ear in children, catarrh, sore throats, sinusitis, tonsillitis, ‘flu and excessive ear wax. You will feel a warming sensation but the effect is gentle and relaxing.
What to expect
The candle is placed over the ear orifice and ignited. It is only allowed to burn to within 4 inches of the end of the candle. As it burns it produces a gentle local heat. The warm air combined with the oil and herbs soften the wax and draw it into the base of the candle. The candle is then removed and the ear and surrounding area is then massaged. The treatment is repeated on the other ear and then a complete facial massage is carried out, paying particular attention to the sinus areas. There are no contra-indications known to date but as a precaution, it is advisable not to use Hopi candles :
• If grommets are in place
• If there is inflammation or ear infection
• If you know your allergic to the contents of the candles.
Most clients find the treatment relaxing and regularly describe a “slight relieved feeling” in the ears and head but also a relaxing and calming effect on the whole system. Sometimes participants experiences popping in their ears shortly after the treatment. The whole treatment takes about 45minutes.
